This thesis covers the approaches, methods and central processes that were employed in the context of establishing the "Earth System Knowledge Platform", a Helmholtz Initiative that encompasses the eight central Helmholtz research institutions that focus on Earth System Sciences. More specifically, the contributions showcase the approach of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research within the Initiative. The central focus is placed on the question as to which processes can be employed to foster meaningful science-stakeholder dialogues and knowledge transfer. Much is still to be learnt about the suitable tools and approaches that support science contributions to overcoming societal challenges.
