Little Jean's childhood is an idyllic one, growing up with two loving parents, helping her father down at his allotment, going for rides in the guard's van on the railway where her father works... until, one day, tragedy strikes and life is never the same for Jean again. Uncertainty is added to insecurity as not only must she and her mother face life alone without a beloved father and husband, but the Second World War breaks out.
