"Let us give the child a vision of the whole universe. The universe is an imposing reality, and an answer to all questions." - Maria Montessori

First English edition of the fourth volume in the Roxana Muñoz Montessori Library, published by the Montessori Association of Mexico, A.C. (AMMAC). The technical companion of Cosmic Education (Vol. 3): eleven complete scripts the Montessori Guide of the Elementary classroom needs to narrate the Great Lessons and their complementary lessons to children of the second plane of development (six to twelve years).

The Great Lessons are not read, they are told. A Guide who learns a script does not recite: she makes a text her own and delivers it to the children gathered in the circle. The difference, seen by a child, is enormous. This book gives the trained Guide the eleven scripts she needs, written for the voice, with their narrative architecture, their pauses, their experiments, and their concrete materials.

The volume gathers:

  • The Five Great Lessons. Universe (also known as God With No Hands or The Coming of the Universe); Life; Human Beings; the Story of Writing; and the Story of Numbers. The narrative heart of cosmic education, told at the start of each school year and repeated annually during the six years of Elementary.
  • Six complementary lessons that AMMAC has developed or adapted over six decades of practice: The Cosmic Address (the child's place in the universe, from galaxy to neighborhood); The Family of the Sun (the solar system); The Formation of the Moon; The Giants of the Megafauna (the great Pleistocene mammals); The Paper that Speaks (the history of paper and book-making); The Mesoamerican Codices (Aztec, Mixtec, and Maya); and The Ox and the House (the origin of the alphabet through Phoenician glyphs).

Each script is written to be told aloud, with concrete materials, before a group of children. They are not read like a novel or an essay: they are read like a musical score. The trained Guide memorizes the script first to the letter; then, with practice, makes it her own. What is preserved is the structure, the key moments, the experiments. What changes is the breathing.

Roxana Muñoz Guevara - President of AMMAC since 1997, Director General of the Montessori Kalpilli Elementary School and Educational Center, and trainer of Montessori Guides in Mexico and abroad - has gathered in these pages decades of practice in the Elementary classrooms of Mexico and the international training carried out by AMMAC. The complementary lessons in particular reflect the collective work of generations of AMMAC Guides who have told these stories, refined them, and brought them back with their observations.

The book is the natural technical companion of Cosmic Education (Vol. 3 of this series), which presents the philosophical and curricular framework. It is also the natural complement of AMMAC's Diploma Program in Cosmic Education and the Great Lessons, where Guides in training learn the inner preparation, the narrative technique, the choice of materials, and the observation of the group during the presentation.

This edition follows the established English-language Montessori literature (AMI, Clio Press, Montessori-Pierson Publishing). The Italian Casa dei Bambini / English Children's House are used by function. The Spanish Taller is named at first mention and then carried in the canonical English form Elementary, so the general English-speaking reader can follow without friction. The expression cosmic education renders Maria Montessori's educazione cosmica.

Published simultaneously in Kindle eBook, paperback, and hardcover.
