Since the beginning of this millennium, the word "intericonicity" has been used to denote a framework theory describing images' reference to other images by transferring theories of intertextuality to the image. The boom in the use of this term has led to its inclusion in expert jargon and specialized lexicons and its establishment in interdisciplinary contexts, albeit without the backing of theoretically sound art-scientific concepts.
