Pipelines and piping systems are the main components of the oil & gas industry, being of crucial importance for the transportation of hydrocarbons over long distances or within power plants, refineries and industrial processing plants. The fact that these structures transporting fluids that are hazardous for the environment are often situated in the proximity of human settlements or are crossing natural heritage areas makes their integrity maintenance an extremely sensitive issue. Dr. Turcu s book presents innovative sensors and algorithms for the continuous integrity monitoring of piping systems and pipeline infrastructures without interrupting their normal activity. The sensors are capable to detect defects from their early stages of formation and also to geometrically characterize them. Information on defect''s geometry is extremely useful for their classification on a meaningful risk scale. This classification is of highly importance for further decisions that will be taken in order to avoid catastrophic environmental accidents like oil spills or gas pipeline rupture followed by fire or even explosion.
