The holiday season has arrived in the Lyons household, and Kimika and Kalynn are ready for lights, food, family, and fun.
Their family celebrates Christmas and Kwanzaa, filling the house with music, decorations, warm memories, and the glow of the Christmas tree and kinara. But this year, the holidays become even more special when Dad's old friend Luis arrives with his family from Puerto Rico.
As Kimika and Kalynn welcome Carlos and his parents into their home, the sisters learn about Three Kings' Day, Puerto Rican holiday traditions, the meaning of the kinara, and the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Through stories, food, candle lighting, laughter, and shared family time, the children discover that different traditions can carry many of the same values: love, unity, faith, creativity, generosity, and respect.
Kimika learns that learning about another culture does not erase her own. It adds new meaning, like adding more colors to a beautiful drawing. Kalynn learns that curiosity is best when it is paired with kindness and respect.
