Lewis Early is beginning to unravel.
As Canada readies itself for war in the autumn of 1939, Lewis's health goes into precipitous decline. Unnerved by the changes in his personality and behaviour, his wife Daisy watches her husband's psychological descent with growing trepidation. Thrust into the still experimental field of psychology, Lewis's new doctor needs information about his past, but the young man is unwilling or unable to cooperate.
In letters that criss-cross the continent, Daisy ploughs up her husband's history and relationships trying to discern the truth amid the perceptions of his family and friends. But some people are better left in the past and the sudden reappearance of an old "friend" threatens not only Lewis's recovery, but Daisy as well. As Lewis's condition free falls, a controversial new psychosurgery offers an irreversible peace at a terrible price. With her marriage in tatters and Lewis's mental state hanging in the balance, Daisy embarks upon a dangerous journey to discern the truth amid lies.
