It takes more than just guts.
We likely all know persons of courage who would perform extraordinary feats of daring under demanding circumstances. We also know persons of intellect who can advise others in order to solve problems. But, how many are a combination of the two? Those who qualify are acclaimed as heroes-some of them, the foolish ones, are acclaimed as leaders.
We follow the character of this story from his transitional years as a callow youth to a young man. His progress to wisdom is replete with frustration and heartache as he confronts tragedy and muddles through. His own misfortunes are complicated as attempts to mitigate the calamities of others land in his lap.
Coping skills and an insight for problem-solving ultimately prove to be his strong suit, but the responsibilities he accepts, as well as those inadvertently thrust upon him, do take their toll.
Perhaps this tale is only an illustration of futility. A stark yarn about humanity at its most ignominious, but nonetheless, one worth the read.
