Rats in the Dark
A Novel by Leonard Le'Doux, Jr.

Kenneth Walker has always believed that money is the only thing standing between him and a better life. Growing up in the rough neighborhoods of South Florida, he starts small-running neighborhood craps games from his backyard and building a reputation as a hustler with ambition. But Kenneth dreams bigger than gambling. He wants power, respect, and the kind of money that can change his life forever.

Alongside his childhood friend Aaron, a charismatic but self-destructive drug addict, Kenneth decides to enter the lucrative drug trade. Their hopes rest on securing a partnership with Young Miles, a respected Cuban supplier whose influence stretches across the city. However, Young Miles immediately recognizes Aaron as a liability. Seeing the addiction that controls him, he refuses to do business with Aaron and offers Kenneth a chance to work alone.

Forced to choose between loyalty and opportunity, Kenneth chooses opportunity.

As his drug business flourishes, Kenneth begins building a new life. He falls in love with Selena, a beautiful Cuban woman who offers him stability and a future beyond the streets. For the first time, Kenneth begins to believe he can escape the poverty and violence that have surrounded him his entire life.

But the streets never let go.

One afternoon, Aaron bursts into a neighborhood bar claiming that armed men are on their way to rob Kenneth and Young Miles. Panic spreads through the establishment. Moments later, two men enter the bar. Believing Aaron's warning, Angel's older brother-the bartender-opens fire with a shotgun. The men are revealed to be undercover police officers. Both officers are killed, and the bartender is mortally wounded in the exchange.

The tragedy sparks a deadly chain reaction.

Angel, devastated by his brother's death, blames Aaron for the disaster and vows revenge. Searching for Aaron throughout the city, Angel instead encounters Kenneth's younger sister, a celebrated high school cheerleader admired by her classmates and beloved by her family. Innocent of the drug war raging around her, she becomes an easy target for Angel's rage.

Demanding information about Aaron's whereabouts, Angel terrorizes the young woman. When she cannot provide answers, he brutally assaults her and shoots her in the back, leaving her permanently paralyzed.

The attack destroys Kenneth emotionally.

Consumed by grief and fury, Kenneth retaliates by murdering Angel's sister, igniting a vicious blood feud that engulfs everyone connected to both men. Families are shattered. Friendships dissolve. Innocent people become collateral damage in a war fueled by revenge.

As violence spreads through the city, Angel and his surviving brother turn their attention toward Young Miles. They view him as a traitor who sided with outsiders and helped empower Kenneth. Their campaign culminates in a bloody assault on Young Miles's apartment. The resulting shootout leaves multiple bodies scattered across the scene and wipes out much of the organization.

When Kenneth learns that Angel and his allies are dead, he believes the nightmare is finally over.

But one loose end remains. Aaron.
