Starting Skills in English Reading and Writing Part A Teacher's Book Starting Skills in English is specially designed for false beginners and remedial learners. It is divided into two parts, A and B. Students can enter the course at A or B level. Each part provides at least 150 hours' tuition. The whole course, therefore, provides at least 300 hours' tuition. There are three books in each part: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar. It is assumed that most users of the course will teach the books in this order, although it is not essential. The majority of the material in the third book, Vocabulary and Grammar, could be set as self-study. Starting Skills in English Reading and Writing: In Part A students learn how to read and write 200 key words in isolation and context from the following knowledge areas: * Education * Daily Life * Work and Business * Science and Nature * The Physical World * Culture and Civilization * Technology * Art and Literature * Sports and Leisure * Nutrition and Health Students will also learn to: * find examples; * identify key parts of speech; * identify pronoun referents; * identify topic changes; * interpret figures; * join sentences with and; * make irregular plurals; * make simple noun phrases; * mark text while reading; * prepare to read; * read encyclopedia entries; * read for an established need; * recognise job suffixes: er, or, ist, ant; * recognise past forms; * recognise vowels and consonants; * scan for capital letters, question marks and full stops; * scan for numbers; * scan for specific phrases; * scan for proper nouns; * understand captions; * use articles; * use capital letters and full stops; * use countable and uncountable nouns; * use s for plural or 3rd person singular; * use some key spelling rules; * use There is/are vs It is/They are; * use subject and object pronouns; and * use want with nouns and infinitives. This material is aimed at students with an IELTS level of 2.0. The exit level of this course is equivalent to an approximate TOEFL score of 250.
