Shelley Hodges, 19, finds her life is fast coming to a dead end. After completing high school in Ridgestone, she finds herself working at the local 711 in the same suburb. Her relationship with her boyfriend, Dave, is on rocky ground and the rest of the time she lives at home with her father who takes out the frustrations of his own failed life on her. Envious of her best friend, Kate, who is on the verge of making it big with her new rock band, Shelley works tirelessly but her life remains at a standstill. In the searing heat of summer, bushfires raging out of control and threatening to burn down the adjacent National Park, Shelley takes comfort in music and the occasional night out. Against everyone's advice, Shelley has hopes and dreams of one day escaping her monotonous suburban life, with dreams of building something more meaningful.
