Пълно описание

James Sloan has spent his life surrounded by wealth, yet he has never believed that money is the measure of a meaningful life. Born into one of New England's prominent families, he is accustomed to privilege but uncomfortable with the expectations that accompany it. Martha, the ambitious daughter of a plumber, has always dreamed of the security, status, and opportunities that wealth can provide. When they fall in love and marry, each believes the other represents the future they have been seeking.

James admires Martha's modest upbringing and the warmth of her down-to-earth family. Martha is thrilled to become part of the Sloan world, certain that marriage to James will finally give her the life she deserves. Their differences seem manageable while prosperity is assured, but beneath their happiness lie two sharply different ideas of what it means to succeed.

They settle in Rock Haven, a fishing town north of Boston, where they purchase a house in Harbor View Heights, a neighborhood overlooking the harbor. James is drawn to the town's mixture of fishermen, laborers, business owners, and wealthy professionals. He wants their two sons to attend the local schools and grow up understanding that a person's worth is not determined by income, occupation, or social standing.

Martha is less certain. The people who work on the boats and in the packing plant do not fit the future she imagines for her family. She expects private schools, prestigious careers, and the respect that should come with the Sloan name. While James sees Rock Haven as an opportunity to raise their children among people from many walks of life, Martha quietly measures the town-and everyone in it-by a different standard.

For years, James's demanding career provides the comfort and status Martha values. He commutes to the city, works long hours, and is frequently absent from home. Then he unexpectedly loses his prestigious job.

For Martha, the loss is a humiliation and a threat to everything she has worked to obtain. For James, it becomes an opportunity to reconsider the life he has been living. When he accepts a lower-paying position with fewer demands, he discovers the freedom of having time for his family, his community, and himself. Martha sees only a dangerous decline.

Their sons further challenge her expectations. One leaves college after a disastrous mistake and begins searching for a new direction. The other dreams of becoming a chef rather than pursuing the traditional education and career Martha has planned for him. James tries to help both young men find lives suited to their abilities and passions. Martha struggles to accept choices that seem to move the family farther from the success she believes they should possess.

As the Sloans confront job loss, disappointment, changing ambitions, and the widening distance within their marriage, each must decide what kind of life is truly worth seeking.

Set in a close-knit coastal town, Seeking Wealth is a thoughtful contemporary family novel about marriage, class, parental expectations, and the courage required to choose an authentic life. It asks whether wealth is found in possessions and prestige, or in freedom, meaningful work, loving relationships, and the opportunity to become the person one was meant to be.
