Пълно описание

"He didn't use."

Three words spoken over a cup of untouched coffee refuse to leave Rena Sobeck alone.

For eleven years, Rena has managed the overnight shift at Milepost 44, a roadside diner along an Ohio freight corridor where truckers, locals, and drifters pass through the darkness. She knows the rhythms of the county, the faces that return, and the things people reveal when they think no one is paying attention.

Then she finds twenty-six-year-old Danny Pruitt dead behind the diner.

The sheriff's department is quick to settle on an explanation. The paperwork moves forward. The county accepts the official version. But Rena notices details others overlook: a loose gate latch, a car parked where it shouldn't be, and questions that never seem to make it into the report.

As she quietly follows Danny's final days, small inconsistencies begin connecting people who should have nothing to do with one another-county contractors, freight records, development deals, missing paperwork, and late-night vehicle movements hidden beneath the routines of everyday life. What begins as a search for answers becomes a dangerous investigation into a system that depends on nobody looking too closely.

Rena isn't a detective. She's a diner manager who has spent years learning how to listen. But sometimes the person who notices everything is the most dangerous witness of all.

When the truth hides behind official records, trusted institutions, and ordinary people with powerful reasons to stay silent, how far can one woman go before she becomes the next problem someone needs to solve?
