This briefs defines student wellbeing and outlines six evidence-informed pathways that can guide schools in the actions they can take to promote student wellbeing. These pathways focus on building positive relationships, providing a safe and positive learning environment, developing students' social-emotional and thinking skills, using strengths-based approaches, fostering a sense of meaning and purpose and developing a healthy lifestyle. Each pathway is underpinned by evidence drawing from the relatively new field of positive psychology as well as educational research on the impact on each pathway for student learning. The benefits of a school-wide focus on student wellbeing for student engagement in learning and their academic success are outlined. Also guidelines for the development and implementation of educational policy that has student wellbeing at its heart or central focus are provided.
