Part of the Towards Freedom series, this volume edited by K.N. Panikkar contains documents related to the year 1940. The first part systematically covers different aspects of the socio-political history of British India. Building upon detailed case studies from across the subcontinent-Bombay, Central Provinces, Madras, Bihar, Bengal, Orissa, United Provinces, Andhra, Malabar, Punjab, Tamilnad, Rajputana, Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad, Mysore, and Travancore-the second part deals with popular movements. It examines movements of labour, peasants, students, women, depressed classes and movements in princely states and explores their linkages with the freedom movement. The introduction by K.N. Panikkar situates the movements in the historical context and underlines their importance in the politics of the year 1940.
